Self-harm is a coping strategy used by someone to help them cope with negative emotions and/or just to feel something when emotions have become so painful the person becomes numb to all feeling.
You’re having thoughts of suicide – of killing yourself – and it feels horrible and a little unreal. It may seem that ending your life is the only solution left to stop the unbearable and overwhelming pain that you’ve been feeling for quite some time now. You feel alone, like no one cares about you, and if you do have some people in your life who you know will be saddened by your death, you feel like they will eventually get over the sadness and move on with their lives.
Sometimes friends on social media say or post things that make us worry about their safety and make us wonder if they might be thinking about killing themselves.
Suicide is a subject that makes us uncomfortable and many of us are afraid to talk about it. However, when you suspect a friend or loved one might be thinking about killing themselves and ask them about suicide and/or they tell you that they are experiencing thoughts of suicide, you now have the opportunity to help them feel less alone, and even hopeful. There is help for the person thinking about dying by suicide.
